SO WHY DO SO MANY AUTISTIC PEOPLE HAVE FOOD ISSUES?

  • SENSORY ISSUES

Texture, smell, taste, colour - all our senses are involved in eating and we can be hyper-sensitive or under-sensitive here. Which can be made even worse if we have to eat in noisy or unfamiliar places….

  • PREDICTABILITY

Lots of us need more predictability in our lives than most, as the world is harder to understand. So sticking to the things we know, and not trying new things, can feel like the safest bet (especially when we are stressed)

  • AND THERE'S MORE...

I’m not a dietician and I can’t speak for everyone. The National Autistic Society in the UK has advice on what you can do when food becomes an issue - here’s a link: eating advice
